Introduction to Tafsir Literature
The Legacy Institute presents:
An applied course on tafsir to build familiarity with tafsir literature, methods of tafsir, & critical analysis of tafsir scholars’ opinions. The course focuses on engaging with the Quran at a deeper level and not only how to access Tafsir and Ulum al Quran literature, but the aspects of training critical thinking and analysis in tafsir.
Each lesson is around 1 hour 15 min sessions.
Who Is this For?
Students with full command of the Arabic language and have studied the basics in the sciences of Shari’ah.
Each session will include the following
The course will include the following
1. Usul al-Tafsir – Principles of Tafsir
• Defining Tafsir
• The relationship of Tafsir to the various sciences of Shari’ah and the Arabic language (e.g. Usul al-Fiqh, Nahw, Sarf, Ishtiqaq, Balagha)
• Revelation of the Qur’an (Asbab al-Nuzul, Makki/Madani)
• The relationship of the Qur’an to past scriptures; Isra’iliyyat in Tafsir
• The art of interpreting tafsir narrations from the Salaf
• The relationship of Tafsir to Qira’at
• Selected Readings
2. Tafsir Literature
• Readings from selected Tafsirs, with a focus on understanding the methodology and features of these various works. Some Tafsir works to be examined:
o Jāmi’ al-Bayān, al-Ṭabarī
o Al-Basīṭ, al-Wāḥidī
o Al-Muḥarrar al-Wajīz, ibn Aṭiyyah
o Al-Kashshāf, al-Zamakhsharī
o Al-Tafsīr al-Kabīr, al-Rāzī
o Anwār al-Tanzīl, al-Bayḍāwī
o Al-Baḥr al-Muḥīṭ, Abū Ḥayyān
o Al-Durr al-Maṣūn, al-Samīn al-Ḥalabī
o Tafsīr al-Qur’ān al-`Aẓīm, ibn Kathīr
o Irshād al-`Aql al-Salīm, Abū ‘l-Su`ūd
o Naẓm al-Durar, al-Biqā`ī
o Rūḥ al-Ma`ānī, al-Ālūsī
o Fī Ẓilāl al-Qur’ān, Sayyid Quṭb
o Al-Taḥrīr wa ‘l-Tanwīr, Ibn `Āshūr
o Mawsū`at al-Tafsīr al-Ma’thūr, compiled by Ma`had al-Imām al-Shāṭibī
3. Analysis of these and other works will focus on readings and analysing the commentary on Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ (and other examples).
