Advanced Quran Study II
– An analytical study of Al-Taḥrīr wa ‘l-Tanwīr by by Al-`Allāmah Ibn `Āshūr رحمه الله – Term 1 & 2 –
These are terms 1 and 2 of a course that explores the Tafsir of the Qur’an via Ibn `Āshūr’s magnum opus, al-Taḥrīr wa ‘l-Tanwīr, and other works of Tafsīr.
On-Demand download of recorded lectures and access to a student group in which you can ask questions from the instructor.
Students will be expected to read their lessons from the Tafsir of Ibn `Āshūr, which will then be discussed and analyzed in class, in comparison with the Tafsir tradition.
In sha Allāh, we will be covering Sūrat al-Fātiḥa and the whole of Sūrat al-Baqara. It is anticipated that this will take four terms, or the course of a year. As the course develops, the exact amount of time needed will become clearer.

*Fluency in reading Arabic is a prerequisite.*
Who Is this For?
Students with full reading comprehension in the Arabic language and who have studied the basics in the sciences of Shari’ah. For those who do not have a background in the study of Tafsir, it is highly encouraged that they take the Advanced Quran Study course on Usul al-Tafsir and the Tafsir Literature as a precursor to this course.
Lectures will be delivered in English, but students will be expected to do a good bit of reading in Arabic.

Course Objectives:
In this course, participating students will acquire the following:
- Assessing the reasoning behind the divergent opinions of the mufassirin
- Understanding the different tools employed by mufassirin to arrive at interpretations
- How to evaluate and critique the opinions of the mufassirin
- The ability to consult the works of Tafsir and supporting literature to arrive at an interpretation
- Identifying the sources that the mufassirin draw upon and how they are deployed (Uṣūl al-Imān, Qur’ān, Sunnah, Arabic language (incl. grammar and rhetoric), Uṣūl al-Fiqh, interpretations of past mufassirin)
- As a case study, an in-depth analysis of Ibn `Āshūr’s mastery over Tafsir methods
- Understanding, identifying and applying the steps involved in Tafsīr:
- The context (siyāq) of the verses
- The mapping of verses by time and geography (e.g. Makkī/Madanī)
- The reasons for revelation (asbāb al-nuzūl)
- Defining the meanings of words in the Qur’ān in light of language and context
- The impact of the different recitations of the Qur’ān on Tafsir
- Interpreting verses in light of other similar verses (Tafsir al-Quran Bil Quran)
- Explaining verses in light of other verses that seem to have contradictory meanings (Mushkil al-Qur’ān)
- Explaining verses in light of the Prophetic Sunnah
- Interpreting the interpretations of the earliest Tafsir scholars
This is an On-Demand course where you can download video of the sessions at your convenience. It is not a live course. There is a group to ask questions and interact with the instructor.
