Commentary on Sh.Ḥātim Al-ʿAwnī’s treatise on “The Rational Foundations of the Ḥadīth Sciences”
In this course, we will be exploring Sh. Ḥātim al-ʿAwnī’s unique treatise, al-Usus al-ʿAqlīyyah, which discusses the rational underpinnings of the methodology of ḥadīth criticism (naqd al-ḥadīth) as employed by the muḥaddithin.
This is important for a number of reasons:
(1) Understanding the rationale behind the underlying principles of the ḥadīth sciences serves to deepen the student’s appreciation of the ḥadīth sciences.
(2) This understanding of the principles of ḥadīth criticism is necessary in order to apply those principles in a coherent fashion to reach sound results.
(3) More importantly, understanding the rational foundations of these principles is necessary to establish whether or not the method employed by the ḥadīth scholars is a sound method for assessing the authenticity of ḥadīth.
This treatise is the first in a series in which the author explores the rational foundations of the ḥadīth sciences, in both their theoretical and practical aspect.
In particular, this work, looks at the rational reasons for accepting or rejecting a report, and then examines the conditions of the muḥaddithīn for an authentic report in light of those reasons.
Delivered in English, the course will consist of a full reading of the Arabic text with commentary. The reading of the Arabic text will also be valuable to students seeking to improve their Arabic reading comprehension.

– Fluency in reading Arabic (mandatory)
